Preplanning Your Funeral: The Most Thoughtful Thing You Can Do for the People You Love

How Funeral Preplanning Eases the Emotional and Financial Burden on Your Family

No one wants to plan their own funeral. Let’s acknowledge that upfront. It’s an uncomfortable thought, and most people put it off indefinitely - not because they don’t care, but because the idea of confronting their own mortality feels premature, morbid, or simply unnecessary right now.

But here’s what I’ve learned after years of sitting with families in some of the most difficult moments of their lives: one of the greatest gifts you can leave behind is a plan. Not because it removes grief - nothing can - but because it removes the burden of decision-making from the people who are trying to process an unimaginable loss.

What Preplanning Actually Means

Preplanning is simply the act of documenting your wishes for your funeral or memorial service before the need arises. It can be as simple as writing your preferences down for your family, or as comprehensive as creating a fully funded preneed plan through a funeral home.

At its core, preplanning answers the questions your family will inevitably face:

  • Burial or cremation
  • The type of service you want
  • Where it should be held
  • Who should officiate
  • What music or readings should be included
  • What kind of tribute reflects your life

It also addresses the practical details most families don’t think about until they’re overwhelmed with grief - your full legal name, Social Security number, military status, insurance information, and key contacts.

When these details are gathered in advance, the arrangement process becomes far less stressful. Instead of making difficult decisions in the moment, your family is simply carrying out a plan you thoughtfully created.

The Gift You Give Your Family

I have watched families fight over funeral decisions, not because they are unkind people, but because grief magnifies every disagreement and every unspoken assumption. One sibling is certain Dad wanted cremation. Another insists he would have wanted a traditional burial. Mom doesn’t know, because no one ever asked him.

These conflicts are entirely preventable. When your wishes are clearly documented, your family doesn’t have to guess. They don’t have to argue. They don’t have to carry the anxiety of wondering whether they got it right. They simply carry out the plan you left. That clarity, in the middle of grief, is an extraordinary relief.

The Financial Advantage

Preplanning also allows you to approach costs on your own terms. With a preneed arrangement, you have time to review options, understand pricing, and make thoughtful decisions without emotional pressure. Our funeral home offers the option to pre-fund services, locking in today’s prices and protecting your family from unexpected expenses later. Payment plans can make prefunding manageable over time, turning what could be a sudden financial burden into a planned and affordable expense.

Whether you choose to pre-fund or simply document your wishes, preplanning creates financial clarity - and peace of mind.

It’s Not Morbid. It’s Generous.

The most common resistance I hear is some version of “I don’t want to think about that” or “If I make these plans, something will happen.” That hesitation is understandable. But preplanning isn’t about dwelling on death. It’s about setting aside a short amount of time now to make one of the hardest days your family will ever face just a little bit easier.

It is an act of compassion - the same impulse that makes you buy life insurance, write a will, or name a guardian for your children. You do these things not because you expect to die tomorrow, but because you love the people who will have to carry on if you do.

What the Conversation Looks Like

A preplanning appointment is not a sales meeting. It is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation with a funeral director or preplanning advisor who will walk you through your option, answer your questions, and help you document your wishes clearly. Some people bring a spouse or an adult child. Others come alone. The meeting can take place at the funeral home or in the comfort of your own home. There is no single “right” way to approach it.

When the conversation ends, you leave with something remarkably powerful: the knowledge that the people you love most will never have to wonder what you wanted. That is not morbid. It’s one of the most thoughtful, generous things you can do.

Interested in starting the conversation? Our team is here to walk you through the preplanning process at your own pace — no cost, no obligation, no pressure. Reach out whenever the time feels right.

At Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, we believe that remembering a loved one should never be limited to a single day. On June 20, we had the privilege of welcoming more than 65 family members and friends to our South Parkersburg location for our inaugural Wings of Love Butterfly Release, a heartfelt remembrance ceremony honoring those who continue to hold a special place in our hearts. The afternoon was filled with meaningful moments of reflection through music, readings, and a moving butterfly release. For many, butterflies represent hope, renewal, and a lasting connection with loved ones who have passed. We wanted to create a simple yet deeply meaningful opportunity for our community to come together, share memories, and find comfort in one another. Throughout the ceremony, a special tribute slideshow played featuring photographs of loved ones submitted by families who RSVP’d. Seeing those familiar faces on screen served as a beautiful reminder that every life leaves a lasting legacy. Local musician Logan Reynolds also performed three heartfelt songs that added warmth and emotion to the gathering. One of the most touching moments came during the butterfly release itself. Families of all ages, including young children, gently released butterflies into the air while sharing stories and memories of those they were honoring. As the butterflies took flight, conversations filled the space with laughter, tears, and cherished recollections. It was a powerful reminder that love continues long after loss. Many attendees expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate. Some returned to honor loved ones who had passed more than a decade ago, sharing how meaningful it was to have a dedicated time and place to remember them. While there were certainly tears throughout the ceremony, there were also countless smiles as families left knowing they had shared a special experience together. Following the ceremony, guests stayed to enjoy light refreshments and continue visiting with one another, reinforcing the sense of community that made the afternoon so memorable. Events like this reflect our commitment to supporting families beyond the funeral service. Healing is an ongoing journey, and we are honored to provide opportunities for remembrance, connection, and hope throughout the year. We are grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this year’s Wings of Love Butterfly Release so meaningful. We look forward to continuing this tradition each year as we gather to celebrate lives well lived and the enduring love that remains.

Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home & Crematory was proud to participate in the 11th Annual Belpre Cruise-In, bringing together car enthusiasts, families, and community members for an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and local support. Held at Belpre Masonic Lodge #609, the event featured a wide variety of classic and custom vehicles, with dash plaques awarded to participating drivers and trophies presented for Best of Show, Second Place, and Third Place. Guests also enjoyed concessions, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, and free admission for spectators. Representing Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home & Crematory at the event were Scott Church, Chris Wagner, Ben Vest, Hannah Rice, and William Vest. The Cruise-In welcomed 30 registered vehicles and over 100 attendees throughout the afternoon. For Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home & Crematory, the event is about more than showcasing beautiful vehicles. It is an opportunity to invest in the community and support future generations. One of the highlights of the Cruise-In is the ability to provide a $1,000 scholarship funded through event proceeds. "We enjoy working in our community, and being able to be a part of offering a scholarship from the proceeds is a huge bonus," shared Funeral Director William Vest. The Cruise-In has become a beloved annual tradition in Belpre; the combination of classic cars, community spirit, and charitable giving continues to make the event a meaningful gathering for all who attend. Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home & Crematory looks forward to sponsoring the event again next year and continuing its commitment to bringing people together while supporting local students and families. Thank you to everyone who participated, attended, and helped make this year's Belpre Cruise-In another success.
