Samuel Blair Curkendall passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 89 in Washington, WV. Born on January 7, 1935, in Century, WV. Sam was a kind and gentle spirit, cherished by his family, friends, and neighbors, always ready to extend a helping hand.
Sam graduated from Phillipi High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. Sam was a talented baseball player and proudly played for the Air Force. He dedicated 34 years of his career to DuPont Washington Works, where his commitment and work ethic were greatly valued.
He was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. Sam lived his faith through his actions and kindness toward others. His hobbies included gardening and keeping a well-maintained lawn. He shared his love of yard work and gardening by always helping with neighbors’ lawns.
Sam is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Jean Cleavenger Curkendall; loving daughters, Amy Deso (Rob), and Lisa Weaver (Sam); brothers, Gary Curkendall (Judy) and Max Curkendall; grandchildren, Sam Deso, Will Deso, Trenton Weaver, Trace Weaver (Dayana), and Tyler Vogel (Sarah); and great-grandchildren, Keith, Darcy and Rose Vogel, and Mateo Weaver. He also leaves behind special nieces and nephews, Heather, Derek, Bryce, Hayden, and Reese Weaver; Mike, Tracy, and Gerald Thompson; Linda Wagner, Brian Curkendall, Lowell Munday, Todd Curkendall, Kathy Curkendall, and many more; and a sister-in-laws, Judy Cleavenger and Rose Curkendall.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Bessie Payne Curkendall; siblings, Beryl Hall, Mary Smearman, Joann Simons, Deward, Ron, Kenny, John, and Wayne; and in-laws, Carrie Lee Cleavenger and John D. Cleavenger.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Philippi, WV, with Pastor Ray Maleke officiating. Family will accept visitors from 5-8 PM, Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Lambert Tatman Funeral Home, south Parkersburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org in Sam’s memory.
Sam will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.
