Jay Steven Memel, 70, of Lake Washington Rd., passed away at his home September 26, 2012 from a two year battle with colon cancer.He was born August 23, 1942 in Lubeck, a son of the late Carl D. and Virginia (Ballard) Memel.Jay was a graduate of PHS where he played football, ran track and wrestled. After graduation, he joined the Marines from 1961 to 1965. After leaving the Marines he became involved in police work. He served 11 years as a policeman in West Palm Beach, Florida. Jay returned to Parkersburg to work for O'Ames Company as a supervisor over shipping/receiving, storeroom and yard crew. He retired January 31, 2001. Jay was an avid exerciser. He ran, played racquetball, rode his bike and exercised at home. He loved farming and raising cattle. He was a very hard worker and will be greatly missed.Jay is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nadine; their daughter, Julie Ann Memel; his two daughters, Jodi Lynn (Doug) Ashley and their daughters, Olivia and Reagan and Stephanie Memel of Maine; a sister, Nancy (Dwight) Cochran and their daughter, Jenny Lynn, of Belleville; a brother, Joseph Memel of Lubeck; a sister-in-law, Angie (Rick) Clinton of Boaz; good friends, Gary Florence and Lee Florence of Pettyville; and his Doxies, Zoe and Abby.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Glenn Memel and Butch Memel; his father and mother-in-law, Jim and Ayleene McAtee; and his good friend, Rodney Crites.The family would like to thank Dr. Cawley and her staff and Housecalls Hospice for all of their love, care, and support. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2666 Pike Street, south Parkersburg.
