Longtime Wood County educator Alice Winona (Pratt) Hall, 87, of Waverly, W.Va. was welcomed into Heaven on Saturday, October 10, 2015 after a short stay at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family.Winona was born on May 17, 1928, spent her early years in Wilbur, W.Va. and attended schools in Tyler County, W.Va. After moving to Wood County she graduated from Parkersburg High School with the Class of 1946. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Glenville State College, graduating Summa Cum Laude and a Masters Degree in Education Administration fromWest Virginia University.Winona began her career in 1954 as a teacher in a one room school at New England Ridge. The following year she opened Gihon Elementary School as Lead Teacher and subsequently spent the next 29 years as principal. During that time she saw a beginning enrollment of approximately 50 students swell to over 400. Colleagues credited her courteous demeanor, professional knowledge, reasonable judgement, and willing assistance to her long term success. At the time of her retirement she was the first and only principal of Gihon and she continued to serve the county in administrative roles at Sumner School and Martin Elementary School. Winona was a past president of the Wood County Principal's Association, a past president of the West Virginia Elementary School Principal's Association, was a past president of the Pi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (an international honorary sorority of women teachers). She also was a member of several West Virginia state school nutritional committees, a life member of thenational PTA, and a participating member of the National Education Association, the West Virginia Educational Association, TOPS and the Gihon Lunch Bunch.She is survived by her four children, Catherine Hawkins and husband, Greg of Parkersburg, W.Va., Joyce Graves and husband, Rocky of Waverly, Joe Hall and wife, Darla of Vienna, W.Va. and David Hall and wife, Sharon of Moon Township, PA; a brother, Jim Carney and wife, Carolyn of Vienna; a sister, Sandra Jean Hritz and husband, John of Winder, GA; seven grandchildren, Jason Nestor (Alicia), Stacy McCartney (Denny), Dan Hall, Buddy Hawkins (Gina), Ryan Hall (Sarah), Matt Graves (Stephanie) and Allison Hall; six great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and many friends.She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Eugene Hall; and infant son, Eugene Jr.; mother, Lexi Floe Pratt; brother, Carl Carney; and great-granddaughter, Faith Lynn Hall.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday October 14, 2015 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna with Pastor Bill Brown officiating.
