Virgil W. “Bill” Archer, 79 of Parkersburg, passed away July 8, 2017 at Camden Clark Medical Center. He was born January 7, 1938 in Parkersburg a son of the late Frederick Ray and Ruby M. Rowe Archer. He was a Parkersburg Firefighter for 21 years and retired in 1988 as a Fire Inspector. He helped to establish the Deerwalk Volunteer Fire Dept. and was the first Fire Chief at Deerwalk from 1976 to 1982. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the 7th St. United Methodist Church. Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Charlene South Archer; a daughter, Cheryl Archer Marlow (John) of Parkersburg; a son, Frederick William Archer (Paula Jean) of Orlando, FL; a brother, Marshall “Ray” Archer of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Tristan Lynch (Josh), Timothy Archer (DJ), Torrey Archer, Maggie Bordas (Noah) and Sabrina Archer; seven great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, Kimberly, Padra and Kyle; two step-great-grandchildren; an aunt, Virginia Rowe; a cousin, Jean Rowe; special, longtime friends, Joe Civitillo and Paul Blair; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and David Archer. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m., July 13, 2017 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St. Parkersburg, with Pastor Brad Davis and Rev. Norman Butler officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
