Richard Dale Cantley, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025 at the age of 88. Born on October 6, 1936, to Hallie and Dewy Cantley, Richard grew up in a coal mining camp in Carbondale, West Virginia, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and faith that shaped his life.
Richard rose to local fame during his years at West Virginia Tech as an All American Point Guard on the basketball team. In April 1957, Richard married the love of his life, Sue Ballard. Richard accepted a teaching/basketball coach position at John Adams Junior High in Charleston, WV, where his passion for shaping young lives became evident, with many of his former students keeping in regular contact. He later pursed a career in sales, working for Proctor and Gamble and Pella windows. Sue and Richard enjoyed being involved in youth and adult ministry at Bible Center Church in Charleston, WV. They shared 67 wonderful years of marriage, building a legacy of devotion and love to each other. Sue preceded him in death in June 2024, leaving behind memories of a beautiful life shared and a bond that will endure eternally.
Richard’s Christian faith was the foundation of his life, guiding him in all he did and serving as a source of strength and inspiration for his family and those around him. His dedication to God and his church was unwavering, and his example of faith continues to inspire those who knew him.
Above all, Richard found his greatest joy in his family. He is survived by his children: Sherri Pizzi (husband Joe), Lance Cantley (wife Terry), Scott Cantley (wife Kelly), and Amy Deem (husband Gregg).
He was a proud grandfather to CJ Hillenbrand, Steven Hillenbrand, Tyler Cantley, Molly Hillenbrand, Jared Cantley, Hunter Deem, Greyson Cantley, Colton Cantley, Cameron Cantley, and Chase Deem. Richard was also blessed with many great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy and pride.
He is also survived by his siblings, Janice Ann Buchannon and David Cantley.
Richard’s family will hold a private gathering to celebrate his life and honor his memory.
He will be lovingly remembered by his family for his kindness and steadfast faith.
