Philip R. Smith was born to Elmer R. Smith and Ethelyn Mae Coon Smith on August 1, 1937, in Corning, NY.
He was married to Doris Marie Rumsey Smith who passed away September 29, 2013. Phillip worked for Mercury Aircraft, out of high school. He graduated from Savona Central School where he participated in most sports. He loved gymnastics, basketball, and soccer.
He was employed by Corning Inc. for 34 years and retired in 1993. Philip was a U.S. Navy Veteran aboard the USS Leyte CVS-32 an aircraft carrier in 1956 and 1957. He and his wonderful wife, Doris, have three children, Wendy S. Wright of Williamstown, Daniel J. Smith (Sasha), and Kristina M. Carr (Nathan) both of Williamstown and another son, Alan Osborne (Christine). They had eight grandchildren, six step grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Philip grew up on a farm on West Hill out of Savona, NY that was originally owned by his mother’s father, John Coon. He always thought it was a wonderful way to grow up. In his work with Corning Glass, Philip traveled to China in 1989 and India in 1992. Along with doing consulting in the glass business, he traveled to Italy and many other areas throughout the US.
A funeral service will be held at 4 pm on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna with Pastor Don Yeager officiating. Military rites will be observed at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 1-4 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
