With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we share the unexpected passing of Michael Eugene Tibbs, affectionately known as “Tibbs” or “Coach,” who departed this life far too soon on July 23, 2025, at the age of 51. A lifelong resident of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Michael was born on December 28, 1973, to Judy Davis Tibbs of Parkersburg and Mike Tibbs of Vienna.
Michael was so much more than his name—he was a devoted father, loving son, caring brother, proud uncle, and a passionate coach who touched countless lives through his leadership and unconditional support. His infectious smile, magnetic personality, and boundless kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1992, where he was a standout McDonald’s All-American basketball player. His talent and drive led him to play collegiate basketball for West Virginia University, Pasco-Hernando University in Florida, and Brewton-Parker University in Georgia. Later, Michael poured his heart into coaching—leading the Ramblers football team of Parkersburg to a championship and coaching AAU travel basketball, where he became a beloved mentor and role model for young athletes.
Michael’s joy for life was unmatched. He lit up every room with his laughter and brought people together with his generous spirit. To know him was to love him, and his loss leaves a void not only in his family but in the entire community that rallied around him.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Javien and Tayjaun Tibbs, both of Parkersburg; one sister, April Harris of Charleston; two nieces, Jevai Harris and Jaedyn Harris of Charleston; one nephew, Jeffrey Harris of Charleston; one great-nephew, Zaeden Harris of Charleston; and many aunts and uncles, including Uncle Brian and Aunt Rachel, as well as an extended “village family” who held him dear. Among them, he shared a special bond with his “partner in crime,” Aunt Foo Foo, with whom he shared countless memories and laughter.
To celebrate his life and legacy, a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 9th. Doors will open at 11:45 a.m. at the Parkersburg High School Fieldhouse and Auditorium, followed that evening by The After-party to The After-life dinner and raffle at The Forty 0 Six Event and Reception Center (The Old Mountaineer Restaurant), starting at 5:00 p.m. Please join us for one last dance in honor of Michael.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Michael’s honor to the Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg, West Virginia—a cause close to his heart and reflective of his passion for empowering youth.
Michael Tibbs will forever be remembered as a beacon of love, strength, and inspiration. Though he may be gone from our sight, his legacy and the lives he touched will live on eternally.
Lambert Tatman Funeral Homes have been entrusted with Michael's final wishes and are honored to serve his family.
