Mary Elizabeth Janssen

Mary Elizabeth Janssen, of Vienna, West Virginia, passed away on July 26, 2026 at Ohio Valley Healthcare surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on August 16, 1938, in Welch, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Kyle Jackson Carter and Mildred Margaret Carter.

Mary lived a full and hardworking life, wearing many hats over the years. She operated a personal care home, raised puppies and farm animals, sewed countless treasures, and devoted herself to raising her family. While she accomplished many things, nothing brought her greater joy or pride than her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her faith was an important part of her life, providing her with strength, guidance, and comfort, and she carried that faith with her in the way she loved and cared for others.

Mary was a true spitfire who kept everyone on their toes. She was quick-witted, strong-minded, and never afraid to tell you exactly what she thought. Her feisty spirit, sharp sense of humor, and unwavering love made her unforgettable. She was “Mamaw” not only to her own family but to nearly everyone fortunate enough to know her. Mary had a way of leaving an impression on everyone she met, whether through her humor, honesty, or the love she so freely gave.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Louis C. Janssen Sr.; her son, Louis C. Janssen Jr.; and her brothers and sisters.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her brother, Carl Carter, Jackie Carter; sister, Kathy Kelley; children, Vincent Janssen, Jack Janssen, and Sherry DeLong (Jeff); daughter-in-law; Margaret Janssen, her grandchildren, Louis C. Janssen III, Christopher Prunty, David Janssen (Adriane), Angela Stanley (Ryan), Matt DeLong, Patrick Janssen (Chelsea), Paul Janssen (Meagan), Hannah Reese (Matt), and Sarah McIntyre (Jordan); and her treasured great-grandchildren, Laynee, Payton, Kaleb, Jayden, Kaden, Emalynn, Sidney, Adra, Lotus, Georgia, Grace, Gunnar, and Charlie, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

Her family finds comfort knowing that her legacy lives on through the generations she loved so fiercely. Though her absence will be deeply felt, they will forever smile at the memories of the spirited woman who never let anyone get too comfortable, always kept them on their toes, and loved with her whole heart. She will be missed beyond measure but remembered with laughter, love, and gratitude every day.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Ohio Valley Healthcare and Amedisys Hospice for the exceptional care, kindness, and support they provided to Mary and her family. Their dedication and compassion brought comfort during a difficult time and will always be remembered.

Funeral services will be held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna, West Virginia, on Friday July 31st, 2026 at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jeremy Daniels officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the time of service.
