Mary Susan Goodwin

Mary Susan Gay Goodwin died Friday, April 12, 2024, after a long illness. She was born August 12, 1946, the daughter of Charles and Mary Bent Gay of Charleston, West Virginia.

She graduated from Charleston High School in 1964, and attended Marshall University. After graduating from Kanawha County School of Practical Nursing , Sue worked at CAMC and as a traveling nurse for the state of West Virginia. While holding a clinic in Weston, WV, she met Larry Goodwin, whom she married April 29, 1972.

After a move to Parkersburg, Sue worked for the county health department, as a private duty care nurse, and for Health South.  She also worked as a cook for Blennerhassett and Neale Schools. After retirement, she used her free time to volunteer in the office of Wayside United Methodist Church, where she was an active member and also served as wedding coordinator.

She completed beautiful cross stitch works, read voraciously, and was an excellent cook. Her pets were treated royally, and her nieces and nephews benefitted from her generosity. She had many friends, especially those from church and her beloved Beta Sigma Phi chapter, where she enjoyed 50 years of friendships.

Preceding Sue in death were her husband Larry and her parents. Surviving is her son Patrick Goodwin (Michael Ortiz); her sister Alice Abernethy (Michael); sisters-in-law Dale Goodwin and Helen “Cookie” Boggs; nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna with Pastor Jeremy Daniels officiating. Visitation will be held from 12 – 1 pm at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wayside United Methodist Church.
