Mary Edith DeMary, age 78 of Williamstown, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Ohio. She was born June 24, 1939, in Enterprise, the daughter of the late Sam A. and Lucy (Gabriel) DeMary. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Richard (Dick) DeMary, sister-in-law, Mary Rose (Moscar) DeMary, and dear friend, Jody Givens. She is survived by her sister, Nancy (DeMary) Chrislip of Newton, NC; her niece, Toni R. (DeMary) McMillion and her husband Mark of Clarksburg, WV; nephew Samuel R. DeMary and his wife, Beckie (Ewing) DeMary of Salisbury, NC; nephew Captain Chris Chrislip (United States Navy) and his wife, Jen (Muir), of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her great-nieces and great-nephews are: Isabella, Sophia, Stephen, and James McMillion of Clarksburg; Gianluca DeMary of Salisbury, North Carolina; and Wyatt and Ben Chrislip of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Miss DeMary graduated from Shinnston High School, earned her bachelor's degree from Fairmont State College, and master's degree from West Virginia University. She was a career educator and taught in Harrison and then Wood County. She spent the majority of her teaching career at Jackson Junior High School from 1964 until her retirement in 1997. In addition to teaching, she also coached a variety of sports, primarily girls' basketball and track. After retirement, she continued to serve as the timekeeper and statistician for the middle and high schools. Her verbal and written support to athletes and coaches through the years was invaluable. She literally touched and shaped the lives of thousands of students and fellow teachers throughout her life. During her short hospital stay at the end, dozens of former students employed at the hospital visited. Aunt MeMe was an amazing and generous aunt to her nieces and nephews, always supportive and encouraging. Her beloved schnauzers filled her life with a special kind of joy and she was an avid fan of both Williamstown High School Yellowjackets and the West Virginia University Mountaineers. She earned many honors during her teaching career and life. Among her most treasured were the 2015 WVSSAC Sportsmanship Award and the 2016 SuperBooster Jacket from Williamstown High School. Miss DeMary was a current member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption in Marietta and former member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Shinnston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The National Humane Society. Friends may call at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Avenue, Vienna, WV from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on December 3rd. A Mass of Christian burial celebrating her life will be held at 10 a.m. on December 4th. in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption in Marietta, Ohio at 506 4th Street. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery with Deacon David Lester officiating.
