Mark Anthony Melrose

August 20, 1933 — October 8, 2024

Mark Anthony Melrose, 91, of Mineral Wells, passed away on October 8, 2024 at his residence with his family by his side.  He was born August 20, 1933 in Mineral Wells, a son of the late Joseph J. Melrose and Lena Robinson Melrose.

He first attended a one-room school on Sycamore Run Road, where he had his older sister, Betty Melrose Stephens, as his teacher.  He then moved on to Parkersburg High School where he became a graduate of the class of 1951.  Next, he attended Glenville State College and then West Virginia University where he obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degree in education.

He was a veteran of the United States Army with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment as a medic and ambulance driver in Germany.

He taught school in Belpre, Ohio for 31 years before retiring to his family farm where he continued to farm and raise cattle for nearly the rest of his life.

He was a devout Christian by faith.  He was a member of Big Tygart Baptist Church where he filled the duties of deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher and choir member.

In later years, he attended Big Tygart Methodist Church where he held the positions of lay leader, Sunday School teacher and choir member.  He earnestly loved the Lord with all his heart and was not too shy to share his testament with everyone he met.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty years, Wanda Lou Brown Melrose, his sisters Lettie Melrose (Bob) Morris, Jo Ann Melrose (Russell) Wolfe, his brother Frank (Freel) Melrose, and one brother-in-law, Lloyd Lemon.

He is survived by one daughter, Melody Melrose Payne (Jeff) and one son, Michael A. Melrose, both of Mineral Wells; one sister, Betty Melrose Stephens; sisters-in-law, Helen Houck Melrose and Kathryn Brown Lemon; and several very special nieces and nephews.

In an effort to honor Mark’s request, the family asks for the graveside service to remain private with his closest family and friends attending at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at the Big Tygart Cemetery in Mineral Wells with Pastors Phil Dent and Elizabeth Carson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mark’s memory to the Big Tygart Baptist Church or the Big Tygart United Methodist Church.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Kelli Cawley and staff along with the Amedisys Hospice Team for their compassionate care and support.

He was a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He will be dearly missed.
