Leatha Maxine Tanner

September 5, 1936 — December 29, 2015

Leatha Maxine Tanner, 79, of Vienna, W.Va. passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at her home after a short battle with colon cancer. She was born in Roane County, W.Va. on September 5, 1936 to Willie I. and Tennessee Matics Scritchfield. She was a lifelong resident of Vienna and was a 1954 graduate of Parkersburg High School. She worked at G.C. Murphy for a few years and married Don in May 1958. She eventually decided to stay at home and raise her children. She enjoyed Sunday dinners with her family and took pride in teaching her boys to cook. Although she had suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis since the age of 12, she never complained about her pain or allowed her disease to interfere with what she had to accomplish. Even after being diagnosed with colon cancer, she was always concerned about the well-being of others, especially her husband. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Donald R. Tanner; son, Donald R. Tanner, Jr. and wife, Becky of Vienna and son, Dr. Andy R. Tanner and partner, D. Dewayne Duncan of Charleston, W.Va. Maxine is also survived by her sisters, Doris Taylor of Vienna, Delores Holbert of Cutler, Ohio; brothers, Isaac Scritchfield and wife, Betty of ParkersburgW.Va. and Bruce Scritchfield and wife, Janet of Rockport, W.Va.; and many special nieces and nephews who added much to her life over the years. In addition to her parents Maxine was preceded in death by a niece, Vickie D. Parsons; her sister, Mary Ault; and brothers, Everett and Leonard Scritchfield. Visitation for Maxine will be held 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave. Vienna. With regards to flowers, Maxine would have said “just save your money”, but if you feel compelled to do something to honor her life, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
