Larry Burl Simmons, 76, of Washington, WV, passed away on October 9th, 2025 at Rockland Ridge Nursing Facility in Belpre, Ohio. He was born on January 22nd, 1951 to Burl and Pauline Simmons of Parkersburg, WV.
Larry was a member of the first graduating class of Parkersburg South High School in 1968. After high school, he attended some college and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Larry worked for decades in the plastics industry - first at Borg Warner Chemicals, then GE Plastics Washington Works, Sabic, and Galata Chemicals. He had many patents in his name from the extensive research and work he did over the years. He traveled the world at times for his work and was very knowledgeable, dedicated, and hardworking; he was highly respected by his colleagues.
He enjoyed listening to classic country music, watching old westerns, playing poker, and studying his guns. He loved his mom’s biscuits and gravy, as well as his wife’s baked steak and mashed potatoes. Throughout the early 2000s, he spent a lot of time helping coach girls’ softball in the area.
Larry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Deborah; his daughter, Sarah Smith; son-in-law, Shaun Smith; as well as his two grandsons, Sanderson and Silas, who were truly the light of his world. He always treasured his time spent with his “Hoot” and “Holler” Pickle Boys - riding tractors, pushing them “to the moon” on the swing set, reading books, and sharing snacks. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Merritt; his brother, Randy (Jean) Simmons; and their families.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his good friend, Jed Fordyce; and his “favorite daughter,” Samantha Fordyce - who was surely waiting for him at Heaven’s gates with a big smile and hug.
Larry will be greatly missed, but he is now at peace and no longer in pain after a long battle with cancer.
Per Larry’s final wishes, there will be no services.
Lambert Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, is honored to serve the Simmons family.
