Kathinka Carolyn Hayes

July 30, 1930 — October 5, 2017

Kathinka Carolyn Hayes, formerly of Little Hocking, Ohio, died on October 5, 2017, at the age of 87. When faced with a grave diagnosis, Carolyn bravely and gracefully chose to live the best she was able with her family and friends. Carolyn’s family wishes to express their appreciation to our extended family, life-long friends, the new-found friends of Carolyn (or Kathinka as she was known in recent years) at Friendship Village of Dublin, the staff and supervisors of Friendship Village independent living and health center, and the caregivers of Capital City Hospice in Columbus. A Memorial Service will be held at Porterfield Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10th, officiated by Rev. Mark Eaton, pastor. The family will be available for visitation at the church from 11:30 am until the service begins and following the service. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Paul Hayes, and her parents, Charles and Kathinka Alloway of New Matamoras. Carolyn is survived by her son and his wife, Craig and Anette Hayes; two granddaughters and their husbands, Alyssa and Dr. Brian Wolfe and Lydia and Scott Allen; five great-grandchildren Charlotte, Penelope, and Harry Wolfe and Sawyer and Hazel Allen; five siblings and their spouses and families: Bradley and Jean Alloway, Charles and Ingrid Alloway, Joan and Earl Smith, Amanda and Harry Merkle, and Neil and Carolyn Alloway. Carolyn graduated from Camden Clark Hospital’s three-year RN program in 1951. She began her nursing career at Camden Clark Hospital where she met Paul in October, 1950, while he was a patient. They were married at the Alloway home in July, 1951. She then worked for over 25 years as a surgical nurse with Dr. Ghassan Khalil and retired from Parkersburg Medical Associates in 1993. Paul and Carolyn lived in the home he built in the late 1960’s in Porterfield. Carolyn played the organ at Porterfield Baptist Church and volunteered in various church ministries for over 40 years. After retirement, Carolyn volunteered with Hospice and the Good Samaritan Health Clinic. As a resident at Friendship Village, Carolyn continued to volunteer on the Vesper Worship Committee and other community committees at the Village. Carolyn was always quick to respond to the needs of others who were experiencing health crises in the Porterfield community and at Friendship Village of Dublin. When Carolyn was admitted to the Friendship Village Health Center, she was already a familiar face to the staff of the Health Center from her frequent visits with other residents and volunteering to deliver patients’ mail each day. Memorial donations may be made to the Little Hocking Volunteer Fire Department (PO Box 213, Little Hocking, OH 45742) and Capital City Hospice (2800 Corporate Exchange Dr., Suite 170, Columbus, Ohio 43231).
