Joseph Leo Joyce

Joseph Leo Joyce born January 16, 1944 to the late Stephen and Vieva (Hawkins) Joyce in Parkersburg WV. Passed away peacefully in the company of his loving wife and several lifelong friends. He graduated from Parkersburg Catholic High School in 1961, after graduating he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Hawaii and WaKinei Japan. Joe was one of the first to make radio contact with US forces in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon completion of his military service Joe returned home and attended Marshall University where he met the love of his life, Barbara. Graduating in 1969 he embarked on a career in teaching and coaching, He spent three years at his alma mater Parkersburg Catholic before teaching and coaching 34 years at Parkersburg South High School. Coach Joyce spent many seasons coaching football, basketball, golf and tennis. Coaching the Parkersburg Catholic Boys tennis teams to back to back state championships in 1996 and 1997. Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years Barbara (Oliveto) Joyce; his four sons, Joey (Lori) of Blacksburg, VA, Johnny (Beth) of Huntington, WV, Tommy of Parkersburg and Timmy of Dillon CO; his four grandsons, Michael, Matthew & Jonathan Joyce of Blacksburg, VA and Mason Joyce of Huntington, WV; and his sister, Ruth Ann Doerman of Lumberton, NC. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, James Lee Joyce; his sister, Renee L. Joyce; and his loving in laws, George Doerman and Thomas and Rosina Oliveto. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday November 7, 2018 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Vienna with Father John Gallagher officiating, following the service there will be full Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post #15 of Parkersburg. Family will receive friends from 2-8 PM at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna on Tuesday November 6, 2018.
