A Video Tribute to John is now available on this site.John Edwin Smittle, 80, of Vienna, W.Va. passed away Friday, September 11, 2015 at his home following a brief illness.He was born September 14, 1934 in St. Marys, W.Va., a son of the late John P. and Gertrude West Smittle.John was a 1952 graduate of St. Marys High School and a graduate of Mountain State College. He worked in accounting with various companies, served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the Masonic Lodge as a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all he loved telling stories of his experiences of working on river barges, of pitching baseball while in the Army and of where and how he caught fish.John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sue Jemison Smittle; one son, John Michael Smittle and his wife, Treva, of Davisville, W.Va.; two sisters, Sara Bogard of York, Maine and Mary Goertler (Erwin) of Williamstown, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Douglass.Funeral services for John will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Avenue, Vienna, W.Va.Pastor Greg Markins will officiate with burial following at the IOOF Cemetery in St. Marys, W.Va.Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Tuesday.
