Joan Crouser Showen, 89, of Parkersburg, WV, passed away on February 1, 2026.
She was born on December 21, 1936, in Liverpool, WV, to the late Cecil and Betty Crouser.
Joan was a graduate of the class of 1954 at Spencer High School. She worked at Heck’s Discount Store for 17 years as a clothing manager. She and the love of her life, Harold Dane, spent 66 wonderful years together before his passing in 2021. She was a proud Navy wife, mother and grandmother, and she devoted her life to her family and her faith. Joan was baptized in the Jordan River, was a member of the Southside Southern Baptist Church and a devoted member of the Seed Sowers for 30 years, whose mission included supplying missionaries with scriptures. She and Harold Dane were avid campers and had many friends who camped together through the years. Those friends and memories were very special to her.
Joan was the heart of the family—our steady presence, our greatest storyteller, and our fiercest source of love. Her legacy lives on through the generations she shaped and the lives she touched so deeply.
She is survived by her son, Michael Showen; daughter and son-in-law, Lesa and Tony Layner; daughter-in-law, Donna Showen; six grandchildren: Eric (Heather) Showen, Chad (Heather) Showen, Jeremy (Kayla) Layner, Kayla (William) Brooks, Josh Cross, and Katrina (Josh) Stephens; nine great-grandchildren: Tristan Showen, Landon & Caden Stephens, Luella Cross, Jaxson & Cooper Layner, Annamoriah Showen, and Cameron & Hadley Brooks.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dane Showen; son Rickey Dane Showen; parents Cecil and Betty Crouser; brother Bill Crouser; and two sisters, Twila Henthorn and Wanda Rhodes.
