Iris J. Smith

September 22, 1925 — April 27, 2017

Iris Jean Smith, 91, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2017 at the Eagle Pointe Nursing Facility. Iris was born September 22, 1925, in Wood County, WV, the daughter of the late Eskel and Cora Holmes. She was a longtime member of South Parkersburg United Methodist Church. Iris was a loving and caring homemaker. She was an avid bowler at RenDor Lanes Sparette League. She loved flowers and working in the dirt, she especially loved growing roses and irises. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to crochet and knit. Iris was a wonderful lady, always smiling and friendly to everyone she met. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Hugh “Lefty” Smith; her three sisters, Thelma Dooley, Evelyn Price and Helen Goff; her three brothers, Ray Holmes, Bud Holmes and Jim Holmes; three grandchildren, Tamara Garvey and Michael Roger Garvey Jr. and Patrick Joseph Garvey; and her son in-law, William Lessner. Iris is survived by her three children, a daughter, Sandra Lessner, her two sons, Randy Smith and Rick Smith (Tina); grandchildren, Michele Phalzgraf (Brian), Melissa Tippee, Benjamen Tippee, Amanda Watkins, Cory Smith, Justin Smith (Amy), Ashley Allen (AJ) and Ryan Smith; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Lessner (Lisa), Bill Lessner, Barbara Lessner and John Lessner; several great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2017 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 2333 Pike St., south Parkersburg with Pastor Jim Plyburn officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen South Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home. A special thank you goes out to the staff, nurses and aides at Eagle Pointe Nursing Home for the love and care that was given to Iris. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Alzheimers Association: West Virginia Chapter, Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Office, 1218 Market St. Parkersburg, WV 26101 in Memory of Iris Smith.
