Irene Boyles Fury, 86, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio.She was born January 8, 1925, in McWhorter, W.Va., the youngest child of the late Frank G. and Calista A. Boyles.In 1928, the family moved to Parkersburg where she was educated in local schools.She was a graduate of Parkersburg High School at the top of her class, earning the J. Madison Jackson scholarship award and was the 16th female athlete to receive a letter in intramural sports.She was in the cast of her senior class play and was in the girls reserves.In 1945, she graduated from Mountain State College.She was a member of Woodmen of the World, ParMar Golf League, Emerson Bowling Team, and was a volunteer with the March of Dimes, American Heart Association and Camden Clark Memorial Hospital.She was employed in the sales department of Penn Metal Company.In 1970, she retired from Penn Metal and moved to Greensboro, N.C. where she was employed by Gilbarco Inc. as an administrative assistant in the engineering department.She was a member of the Gilbarco Softball, Bowling, and Racquetball teams.Through her employer she earned CEU's from the University of Georgia, University of Wisconsin, University of Chicago and Wake Forest University.Irene was past president of the American Business Women Association “ABWA” and in 1978 was elected by her peers as Woman of the Year.She was a member of the Starmount Christian Woman's Club.She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church.She participated in the Mobile Meals Program.She served as Vice President and Secretary of the United Methodist Women for six years.She was Devotional Chairman of Circle 6 and a teacher of the adult Sunday School Class.She served on the senior Gracefull Living Council for eight years as Secretary.In 1991, she retired from Gilbarco and started her tenure with the senior's volunteer programs.She was a volunteer for Shepherd's Center of Greensboro in the office, Adventures in Learning, Traveling Shepherds and was a charter member of the Singing Shepherds.She was on the advisory board of R.S.V.P. “Retired Senior Volunteer Program”, served on the executive board of Church Women United.She received commendations from two North Carolina governors for her senior voluntary work.In 2004, she returned to Parkersburg to reside with her son.She was a member of Stout United Methodist Church, Rebecca Circle and Upper Room Sunday School Class.She was a member of the Theta Theta Sorority.She is survived by her son, Donald C. Fury, Jr. of Parkersburg; two grandchildren, Laine C. Fury of Belpre, Ohio and Lindsey N. Fury of Supply, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Kylee and Jayden Fury of Belpre, and Devin Siler, Zerrence and Xzylan Clarida of Supply, N.C.Irene was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, (infant brother) Hoy, Arden of Parkersburg and Harley of Bakersfield, Calif.; four sisters, (infant sisters) Justine and Virginia, Edith Taylor of Omaha, Nebr. and Juanita Grimm of Greensboro, N.C.At Irene's request, there will be no visitation or services.The Lambert-Tatman Funeral Homes and Crematory will be assisting the Fury Family.The family would like to recognize The Arbors of Marietta for their professionalism and loving care for the past five weeks.
