Herbert Wayne Palmer

Herbert Wayne Palmer, 90, died on March 26, 2017. He was born in Ravenswood, WV, on June 18, 1926, the only child of Harry and Vesta Palmer. Herbert grew up on Lockhart Fork, near Sandyville, WV. He graduated from Gilmer High School in Jackson County in 1944. He was a graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor and Master Degree. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Army where he eventually attained the rank of Second Lieutenant. Herbert was a teacher and a principal. He began his career in 1955 as a history teacher at Williamstown High School. He became the school's assistant principal in 1964. He transferred to Parkersburg South High School when the school was established in 1967 as the assistant principal and became the school's principal in 1968, where he served until his retirement in 1983. Herbert had a long and active retirement. He enjoyed family activities, reading, and spending time on the family homestead in Jackson County. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Herbert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma Sue Palmer; two sons, Michael W. Palmer and Keith R. Palmer; and two grandsons, Benjamin T. Palmer and Daniel W. Palmer. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Trinity Episcopal Church at 430 Juliana St., Parkersburg, with The Rev. Paul L. Hicks officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen South Cemetery in Parkersburg, with full military rites by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg. A reception will be held at the church at noon Thursday.
