Furman "Pony" Earl Souther

Furman Earl “Pony” Souther, 94, of Vienna, West Virginia passed away July 10, 2018 at Camden Clark Medical Center. Pony was born February 7, 1924 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, son of the late William Earl Souther and Grace Jane Schrader Souther. He graduated from Parkersburg High School with the class of 1942. He retired after working 33 years in the Accounting Department and as Stores Supervisor for FMC American Viscose Division and another 11 years as a supervisor and buyer in the Purchasing Department for American Cyanamid Company (Cytec). Pony was a member of the Vienna Baptist Church for 50+ years where he was active in the Senior Choir, served on several committees, and along with his wife, was a co-counselor for the Junior High Baptist Youth Fellowship. For 50+ years, Pony was a member of the Parkersburg Masonic Lodge No.3, Jerusalem Chapter No.3, Royal Arch Masons, Calvary Commandery No.3 Knights Templar and American Legion Post No. 15. He was active in coaching baseball and basketball for the Vienna Recreational Leagues. One of his greatest joys in life was the many fishing trips to Canada with the love of his life, Marge, his sons and friends. As a teenager he helped to organize the Juvenile Jug Band which was broadcast over radio station WPAR Parkersburg and radio stations in Zanesville, Ohio and Ashland, Kentucky. The band presented stage shows in various schools in the area to raise funds for the PTAs and performed in local churches and theaters. Pony was a singer and a comedian for the band. During WWII, Pony served as Sergeant in the 780th Anti-Aircraft Battalion until the allies gained control of the air. He was then transferred to the 605th Combat Engineers in the European Theater of Operations. Surviving are his beloved wife of 72 years, Marjorie Tinney Souther; his two sons, Gregory Earl Souther (Sharon) of Ashland, Kentucky and Mark David Souther of Clearwater, Florida; one sister, Marjorie George of Lancaster, Ohio; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Eugene Souther, Robert Lyle Souther and Glen Elsworth Souther; two sisters, Evelyn Adams Thorne and Frances Adams Young. Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 16, 2018 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave, Vienna, West Virginia, with Pastor Bill Brown officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Parkersburg, West Virginia with Masonic and Military Rites. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to7:00 P.M. at the funeral home in Vienna.
