Donald Ray Tanner, 87, passed away unexpectedly on October 13, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s dementia.He was born in rural Wood County on July 9, 1932 to Ernest and Ruth Tanner.He joined the Air Force at age 19, served his country proudly and enjoyed time in Alaska, England and Germany during his time in the military. He returned to Parkersburg and married L. Maxine Scritchfield in 1958.They moved to Vienna and spent 57 years together until her death in December 2015.He was retired from E.I DuPont Washington Works, an avid gardener, could fix just about anything and enjoyed daily walks until age 86. He is survived by two sons, Donald R. Tanner, Jr and wife Becky of Vienna and Dr. Andy R Tanner and partner Dewayne Duncan of Charleston, WV.He is also survived a sister, Beulah Lane, of Williamstown, WV and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Ernest, Jr, Virgil and Elvin Eugene Tanner; sisters Ruth Tanner, Fay Davidson and Nora McVay. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for his long-term caregivers who provided much compassion and support since his wife passed away.His caregivers included his late sister-in-law Doris Taylor and niece Charlotte Taylor.Long-term caregivers include his sister-in-law Deloris Holbert, niece Julie Kuczko, Ruth Morris and Barbara Poling. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 16th 11:00 AM Rockland Cemetery in Belpre, OH, with Pastor David Carrico officiating. Full Military Honors will be performed by the American Legion Post #15.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna, WV is assisting the family.
