Fury, Sr., 85, of Parkersburg, W.Va. passed away at The Arbors of Marietta, Ohio after a long and courageous battle with cancer.He was born in Davisville, W.Va. on March 30, 1925, a son of the late Delbert Fury and Bernice Hamrick Fury.He worked as an electrician, having been retired 23 years from the Fourth District Local I.B.E.W. and was a true outdoorsman who hunted and fished throughout North America and traveled extensively overseas after retirement. He bowled for many years locally, but his true passion was golf, being a member of the Senior Men's Golf Association at Golf Club of West Virginia and enjoyed five hole-in-ones during his life. He was Scout Master of Troop 12, Stout Memorial Methodist Church, for many years and served as Scout Master for the combined scout troops of the Katooga Area Council for the BSA National Jamboree in 1960 at Colorado Springs, Colo., and coached the PNB Little League teams to league champions in the late '50s. He was also a member over the years of several fraternal organizations in Parkersburg. He was truly a man who never met a stranger and enjoyed friends and family to fullest. He loved the West Virginia Mountaineers, especially football.An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 142nd 90mm Artillery Battalion as a specially trained Forward Observer. He saw action briefly in North Africa before landing June 6, 1944, at Normandy, Omaha Beach, with the seventh wave volunteering to call fire for off shore naval batteries. He was in action at the Battle of the Bulge, Baston and Huy, Belgium. He was severely burned in Brolend, Germany, in March 1945 and ended the war in an English field hospital, being discharged March 14, 1946, at Ft. Meade, Md.He is survived by his son, Donald C. Fury, Jr. of Parkersburg, W.Va.; his sister, Dortha Roach of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Laine C. Fury (Angie) of Belpre, Ohio and Lindsey N. Fury of Supply, N.C.; and his great-grandchildren, Kylee, Jayden, Devin, Zerrance and Xzylan; also a very special friend and companion, Etta Griffin of Vienna, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Goldie Fury; stepsister, Betty Shaw; and his brother, Norman P. Fury.The family would like to extend its sincere appreciation and thanks to Dr. Jorge Garcia and Shari Black, CNP of the Cleveland Clinic for not only treatments over the past five years that provided longevity and quality of life, but for their professionalism and friendship.The family would also like to acknowledge with sincere thanks the entire staff of The Arbors of Marietta for their courtesy and friendships over the last two months in providing care, comfort and medical assistance and also Housecalls Hospice for their support and care.Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Avenue, Vienna, W.Va. with the Rev. Scott Sears officiating. Burial with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg will follow in Evergreen North Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
