Delma “Marie” Cain Smith (Mom, Granny, and Aunt Reenie)

Proverbs 31:28-31 says, “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

Heaven has a new member in the choir, Delma “Marie” Cain Smith. She was a blessing to all for 94 years until she answered the Lord’s call and peacefully entered His arms on August 26, 2026. She was courageous in her battle with Dementia. She was the beloved daughter of Glenda Geneva Ferguson Cain & Hartzel Bernard Cain, of Tanner, WV. Born January 16, 1932.

She was a devoted Christian, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known as “Granny.” She treasured her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and cherished every moment with them, also treasured her nieces and nephews, she was “Aunt Reenie” to them. Her graceful influence was endless, and she was a genuine servant of the Lord. Her home was open to all; many people sat at her table to enjoy her delicious meals and desserts.

She sang with her parents, sister, and brother, even making records. She sang in a quartet with her sister, brother-in-law, and his brother. She continued to sing in church, as part of a Ladies’ Trio, with her daughter, Tami, and Francis Green, who has already moved to Heaven. She directed choir at Baptist Gospel Temple, sang in the choir. She was later to be a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Belpre, where she sang in the choir, a quartet with her daughter and son-in-law, Tami and Wayne Beverly, and Gary Armacost, who has also gone home to glory. After his passing, her grandson, Craig Beverly, joined the quartet. She sang in the Ladies’ Ensemble and a General Ensemble. She loved singing and took every opportunity to do so. The places she sang throughout her life are too numerous to mention. Even with her Dementia, she sang in the choir at The Wyngate Senior Community. The staff at Ohio Valley Health Care advised us that she would break out anywhere and without hesitation sing Amazing Grace. The activity director there told us that when she sings, she felt they could catch a glimpse of what she was like before her dementia.

She taught Sunday School classes for many years. She and dad worked with the teens at Baptist Gospel Temple. She taught in Vacation Bible School, the teenage girls. She also taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church of Belpre.

She was a prayer warrior for all.

She was a hugger, so if you were in her path, you received at least one hug. Her hugs will be missed by all who received them.

She worked as a cook at the school in Tanner. After her last child, Tami, started school, she began babysitting for many years. She even babysat the children of the children she babysat for. Sometimes as many as 10-12 at a time. She loved them all and they received good nutritious meals.

She resided in Parkersburg, WV with her husband George Norman Smith. She is the loving mother of her son, Thomas Bernard Smith (Debbie) and her daughter, Tami Marie Smith Beverly (Wayne). She has three grandchildren, Nicole Marie Smith Moyers (Keith), Victoria Lynn Smith Dennison (Jacob), Craig Alan Beverly (Cierra), Additional Granddaughter, Ashley Cole Craft (Cierra’s sister), six great-grandchildren, Kaelynn Nicole & Garrett Thomas Moyers, Rileigh Paige & Kileigh Brooke Dennison, Cole Wayne & Calan Wesley Beverly. Many nieces and nephews she loved dearly as well as a sister-in-law, Joyce. These are left behind to cherish her life and memories.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 74 years, George Norman Smith, her parents, Hartzel & Geneva (Ferguson) Cain, sister Delores Cain Amos (Allie), brother Buddie Ross Cain (Judy), brother Robert Cain. Her in-laws, Thomas (Della Pratt) Smith, infant brother-in-law Tommy Smith, brother-in-law Bill (Letha) Smith, brother -in-law Dennis (Edra) Smith.

Mom and Dad are now reunited in Heaven with the Lord and many other family members and friends. She will be missed by many, but those who know the Lord as their Savior will be able to meet her again and live together for all eternity.

We want to give special thanks to the staff at The Wyngate Senior Living Community for their care and patience with mom during her time there.

We also want to thank the staff at Ohio Valley Health Care for taking care of her during the later part of her life and fight with dementia. They were so kind, caring, and patient with her.

Family will accept visitors beginning at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2026, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Lambert Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., South Parkersburg, with Pastor David Nutt officiating. Pastor Hickman and his wife Jeannie will honor mom in song, they have been faithful to visit her before and after her dementia. Burial will take place at Sunset Memory Gardens.

Lambert Tatman Funeral Home, South Parkersburg, has been entrusted with Marie’s final wishes and is honored to serve the Smith family during this time.
